Get to Know Retinal Floaters: Factors and Management Options

Retinal floaters are minute, shadowy shapes that glide across your field of vision, often showing up as spots, threads, or cobweb-like structures. They happen when tiny clumps of gel or cells form in the vitreous, the jelly-like substance inside the eye. As the vitreous contracts with age, these clumps create shadows on the retina, leading to the appearance of floaters. Although floaters are common and generally not dangerous, they can be bothersome and unpleasant.

In most cases, floaters are non-threatening and don’t require medical intervention. However, if you experience a sudden increase in floaters, flashes of light, or a loss of peripheral vision, it could signal a more serious issue, such as retinal detachment. Early diagnosis is essential for preserving your vision and preventing potential complications. At Eye Center South, our retina specialists use state-of-the-art diagnostic tools to carefully examine the health of your retina and recommend appropriate treatments. While many floaters diminish over time, in some cases, laser treatment or vitrectomy may be necessary for more severe cases.
